Orthopedic surgeon and a founding partner of OrthoAtlanta, Joseph S. Wilkes, M.D., retired effective January 31, 2020. Dr. Wilkes dedicated his 40 year career in sports medicine and hand surgery to exceptional patient care. Dr. Wilkes' patients are being seen by OrthoAtlanta physicians at our locations including Piedmont and Stockbridge.

Joseph Wilkes, M.D., is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and is an American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Fellow. Dr. Wilkes is fellowship trained in both sports medicine and hand surgery. He is a general orthopaedic surgeon with a practice that encompasses total orthopaedic care including general orthopaedics, fracture care, work injuries and upper and lower extremity and joint replacement. His interest is in complex disorders of the shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand including arthroscopy, repair and reconstruction. Prior to his founding role in OrthoAtlanta, Dr. Wilkes was the Managing Partner of the Atlanta region of The Hughston Clinic, P.C.

Dr. Wilkes’ interest and training in sports medicine have benefitted many organizations at the local, national, and international level. He was the Coordinator of Venue Medical Directors for the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, and functions as an orthopaedic consultant for the U.S. Luge Association. Dr. Wilkes has served as Chief Tournament Physician for BB&T Atlanta Open tennis, and he has participated as a special team physician for the Atlanta Tennis Challenge ATP event, the Chattahoochee Rowing Regatta and the Georgia Games. He has served as associate team physician for the Atlanta Falcons football and as a medical provider to the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl and Peach Bowl football games.
Dr. Wilkes served as team physician for Clayton State University for over 25 years, and was honored with an induction into the Clayton State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2015. He also serves as team physician for Woodward Academy and Jonesboro High School. In 2006, Dr. Wilkes was awarded the Jack C. Hughston Physician of the Year Award by the Georgia Athletic Trainers Association. He has also served as Medical Director for the Broadway traveling productions of “Wicked: The Emerald City Tour” and “Movin’ Out.”
