Andrew D. Gailey, M.D.

Andrew D. Gailey, M.D. is a fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in Sports Medicine and provides care for patients at our Downtown Augusta, Evans, and Aiken locations. His practice focuses on the operative and non-operative treatment of sports-related injuries and musculoskeletal conditions in patients of all ages and activity levels. Dr. Gailey believes in developing a patient-centered treatment plan through open communication and a thorough discussion of all available options. When appropriate, he prefers to begin with conservative treatment and less invasive approaches. When surgery is necessary, his goal is to restore native anatomy and function whenever possible, helping patients return to their previous activity levels and enjoy an active lifestyle.

Dr. Gailey specializes in minimally invasive orthopedic procedures, with particular interest and training in knee, shoulder, and hip arthroscopy. He treats a wide range of sports-related injuries, including ACL and meniscal tears, rotator cuff tears, shoulder instability and labral tears, hip labral tears associated with femoroacetabular impingement (FAI), cartilage injuries, patellar and quadriceps tendon tears, pectoralis major tears, hamstring injuries, and ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) injuries. He performs UCL repairs using a collagen-coated internal brace as an alternative to ligament reconstruction when appropriate. Dr. Gailey also treats elbow injuries, tennis and golfer’s elbow, and performs joint replacement procedures of the shoulder, knee, and hip.

During his Sports Medicine fellowship at Andrews Sports Medicine in Birmingham, Alabama, Dr. Gailey cared for numerous collegiate and professional athletes and gained extensive experience in the treatment of athletic injuries. He served as a team physician for the University of West Alabama and Shelby County High School and also assisted with coverage for the University of Alabama. His experience in sports medicine has included team coverage for the Memphis Redbirds, Birmingham Barons, Alabama Ballet, University of West Alabama Football and Rodeo, Shelby County High School Football, and the University of Alabama Football program. He also participated in pre-sports physical examinations for area high school athletes.

Dr. Gailey completed his comprehensive orthopedic surgery training at Campbell Clinic in Memphis, Tennessee, where he received extensive training in orthopedic trauma and treated a variety of fractures and traumatic injuries. He also developed a special interest in shoulder arthroplasty during residency. Following residency, he completed a fellowship in Sports Medicine at Andrews Sports Medicine in Birmingham, Alabama. Dr. Gailey has also served as course faculty and presenter for the annual Andrews Injuries in Baseball Course, where he presented on important anatomy and clinical implications for common elbow conditions in the throwing athlete.
