Biography
Daniel R. Lewis, MD is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in hand and elbow care. He treats patients with a wide range of conditions affecting the upper extremity, including carpal and cubital tunnel syndrome, fractures, arthritis, nerve injuries, tendon injuries, sports injuries, wounds and infections. His clinical interests include upper extremity spasticity and complex peripheral nerve injuries.
Dr. Lewis has extensive experience treating complex conditions of the hand and upper extremity. His surgical expertise includes carpal and cubital tunnel releases, fracture repair, joint fusions and arthroplasty for arthritis of the fingers and wrist, tendon repair and transfers, denervation, nerve repair and transfers, arthroscopy, and wound and infection management. He also specializes in the treatment of upper extremity spasticity related to stroke, spinal cord injury, cerebral palsy and neurodegenerative conditions. His experience includes tendon lengthening and releases, hyperselective neurectomies, joint fusions and Botox injections. He has also treated complex nerve injuries, including brachial plexus injuries, nerve palsies and traumatic nerve injuries, as well as painful neuromas associated with amputation.
Dr. Lewis is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and holds a Certificate of Added Qualification in Hand Surgery. He is a member of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, American Association for Hand Surgery and American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Previously, he served as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Atrium Health and was part of the teaching staff for the OrthoCarolina Hand Fellowship and Atrium Health/Carolinas Medical Center Orthopedic Surgery Residency. He has also held leadership positions with OrthoCarolina, including President and Chairman of the Board, Executive Committee member and Finance Chair, as well as committee roles with the American Society for Surgery of the Hand.
Dr. Lewis believes in providing compassionate, patient-centered care by listening to each patient's concerns and educating them about their condition. He works with patients to develop treatment plans through shared decision-making, with the goal of improving function and quality of life. He chose orthopedic surgery because of his interest in the complexity of hand anatomy and the variety of surgical treatments available to help patients regain function. He was influenced throughout his career by mentors Bill Kleinman and Glenn Gaston. Dr. Lewis also received a Congressional Award for performing an emergency finger replantation/revascularization surgery on a U.S. congressman's grandson.
