Dr. Jeremy Thompson is a board-certified orthopedic spine surgeon with Piedmont Orthopedics | OrthoAtlanta, serving patients in Macon and the surrounding communities. He specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine, with clinical interests that include degenerative spine conditions, spinal fractures, scoliosis, cervical and lumbar radiculopathy, cervical myelopathy, disc herniation, spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis and sacroiliac joint pain.
Dr. Thompson provides both nonsurgical and surgical treatment options for patients with spine conditions. His surgical expertise includes discectomy, laminectomy, foraminotomy, cervical, thoracic and lumbar fusion, disc replacement, minimally invasive spine surgery and robotic spine surgery. He incorporates advanced techniques and technology into his practice, including minimally invasive approaches, robotic spine surgery and disc replacement.
Central to Dr. Thompson’s approach is helping patients understand both their condition and the source of their pain. He believes many spine-related conditions can be successfully managed without surgery and prioritizes conservative, nonsurgical treatment whenever appropriate. When surgery becomes necessary, his goal is to provide the least invasive surgical option possible while helping patients reduce pain and restore function.
Dr. Thompson brings a unique perspective to caring for spine patients because he has experienced a serious spinal injury himself. After graduating from Wake Forest University, he was selected by the Green Bay Packers in the fourth round of the 2008 NFL Draft. During his professional football career, he sustained a spinal cord injury that ultimately led to his retirement from the NFL. His experience as a patient and his recovery helped inspire his transition from professional athletics to medicine and continues to shape the empathy and understanding he brings to his patients today.
Dr. Thompson earned his medical degree from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, followed by an orthopedic spine surgery fellowship at Norton Leatherman Spine Center in Louisville, Kentucky.
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Thompson has contributed to orthopedic and spine research through numerous peer-reviewed publications and presentations. His research has addressed topics including spinal fusion, sacroiliac joint fusion, osteoporosis and the spine, and other areas of orthopedic and spine care.
