OrthoAtlanta provides sophisticated diagnostic imaging services through the use of Magnetic Resonance Imaging, or MRI, units. Approved by the FDA in 1984, MRI is the most sensitive noninvasive imaging method for a broad spectrum of diseases affecting the musculoskeletal system. MRI’s advantage over other imaging techniques is due primarily to the increased contrast resolution of body tissues and disease processes. It is a critical key to the success of our orthopedic specialists in Atlanta being able to properly diagnose our patients.
In the practice of Orthopedics, the MRI plays a vital role in the diagnosis and treatment of sports injuries and of the entire musculoskeletal system. This modality can provide our Atlanta orthopedic surgeons with exquisite contrast detail between different tissues with very similar densities. Thus, MRI is the Gold Standard for testing of the components of the musculoskeletal system including joints such as the shoulder, knee, wrist, ankle and foot.
MRI does use powerful magnets, so a thorough screening process is critical to our patients’ safety and to the effectiveness of the exam. Be prepared to answer a series of questions designed to determine if there may be any metal in your body that might be considered a risk factor for an MRI procedure.
The MRI Technologist at each site is certified by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists, with additional clinical experience in MRI scanning. Experienced and knowledgeable, both technologists meet and exceed the minimum qualifications recommended by the American College of Radiology.
